I am always amazed at how the small things in life can make such a big impact. Take for instance moving a sticky note. Just today I was feeling a bit overwhelmed. So I began to sort through some paperwork and get it organized. This always helps me beat down overwhelm– do one task and complete it. Once you have a small task done, it changes your psyche and moves you to a place of accomplishment and empowerment. Sounds crazy right? Well, crazy or not- it works.
Back to my sorting of papers.
I continued to stack receipts together and group them by date (this is a big deal when you travel like I’ve been doing lately). I stacked and clipped and then pulled my “blue book,” a journal for tracking ideas that has become a fixture in my system of keeping up with travel and expenses, and I noticed that I had not moved a sticky note from the top of the book to the side.
The way my system works is that a dated sticky note pokes out from the top of the book marking a particular date. It stays there until I submit the receipts for that trip. Once I have submitted the receipts, I move the sticky note to the side of the page. This creates a visual system for me that in an instant lets me know if I am up to date or getting behind.
Today while I was sorting the receipts I realized that I had neglected to move a sticky note.
As soon as I moved it from the top of the book to the side I felt a sense of relief. That one small act symbolized that I had completed something. I was energized then to do more.
One small taste of completion and I get empowered. This is the reason why when I make a “to do” list I always write “make a list” at the top. That way when I finish making the list, I can cross off the first item.
Feeling overwhelmed? Pick one small thing you can do- as small as moving a sticky note. Conquer it and revel in the power!
