James Patterson did it with this one. His young adult book, Maximum Ride, provided just that for this reader- a Maximum Ride. Talk about a page turner.
In this first book of the series, readers are taken on the journey of Max and her misfit gang of genetically altered young people as they travel from California to New York City in hopes of discovering who they are. And how do you imagine they made the trip? Well, they flew of course! Yes, the altering they have undergone includes giving each child a pair of wings that can be used for flight.
Max and her friends are a family of sorts, but more appropriately are called the flock.
Of course, no journey of discovery would be complete without being chased by bad guys. In this story, the bad guys are called Erasers. Yes, appropriately named. They are on a mission to erase Max and her gang from existence, or are they? The only thing the reader can be sure of in this novel is that the story is going to fly- pun intended.
This book is written for young adults, grade seven and up. It is a great adventure story for the age group with a hint of romance looming in future editions. If you like the fast paced action packed style of writing known to Patterson’s work, you’ll love Maximum Ride. One suggestion, be sure you have the next novel in the sequence on your shelf because when you close the cover on this one, you’re going to be ready to open the next.
